Biography

The Rev. Dr. Joy A. Schroeder teaches church history, worship, and other religion courses at Trinity Lutheran Seminary and the Department of Religion and Philosophy. A prolific scholar and lecturer, she holds the Trinity Endowed Chair in Lutheran Heritage and was the inaugural recipient of Capital University’s Faculty Scholar Award.

Dr. Schroeder is a Lutheran (ELCA) pastor who regularly speaks in congregations and clergy continuing education events throughout the country. She was part of the ELCA–Roman Catholic task force that wrote "Declaration on the Way: Church, Ministry, and Eucharist" (2015). She currently serves as a member of the national ELCA–Catholic dialogue.

Professor Schroeder’s areas of research include medieval and Reformation studies, the history of biblical interpretation, and the history of women in Christianity and Judaism. She is the author of five books. She is currently working on her next book, The Bible in the Lutheran Tradition, forthcoming from Oxford University Press.

She has also produced numerous scholarly articles and denominational publications that translate and interpret church history—and particularly the history of women—into important insights that inform both historical and contemporary understanding. Above all, Professor Schroeder challenges her students by setting the same high expectations in the classroom that she has realized in her own scholarship.
